Doctor Who Season 2 Episode 2: The Dalek Invasion of Earth aka World’s End
A man staggers towards the River Thames, wearing ragged clothes and a strange metal helmet. He screams, tearing the straps off the helmet, walks into the river, and drowns himself. Near the same spot, the TARDIS materialises, the Doctor surmising from the surroundings that they have landed in London. Ian and Barbara are delighted they have returned home at last, but it is a curiously silent and deserted London. The Doctor is concerned about the decay they see around them and wonders about what year it is, fearing that it is nowhere near Ian and Barbara’s time. Susan tries to look over a wall, but slips and twists her ankle, at the same time that the bridge under which the TARDIS has materialised collapses, burying the TARDIS and blocking the travellers’ access to it. The Doctor and Ian decide to look around in a nearby warehouse for tools to help unblock the TARDIS door. Barbara remains behind to look after Susan.

I thought Susan Foreman was a fifteen-year-old girl. If so, what on earth does David think he’s doing?! Am I the only one who noticed this? T.T
Though I suppose he didn’t have a chance to wait any longer.

She was fifteen when this started. Who knows how long they were in the TARDIS traveling? Not all the stories were likely told, you know.

Yeah she’s Gallifreyan, given that The Doctor was centuries old in his first life by the time we meet him, in all likelihood, the life cycle is much slower than that of homosapiens. He maturity level might have been that of a 16 yo human but her age was probably on the order of 80 some years. The actress was at least 25 after all.

Also, say she is around 15 or 16. He doesn’t seem to bewritten to be much older. Around 17 o 18 I’m guessing. And, 45 years ago, the laws weren’t like they are now. Hell, 60-70 years ago, women were marrying at age 14-15, to men twice heir age, on a regular basis.

This is the best early series, and moves the show from a series of hapless adventures in the first season (peaking with the first show of the second season, “Planet of the Giants” into serious drama. Twenty years after WW-II this episode evokes the Nazi takeover of Europe (with strong fears of an invasion of England). It features resistance fighters, black marketeers, collaborators, forced laborers etc. It also explicitly references the extermination of humans as the “final solution’ directly evoking the Holocaust. Finally, it moves on to the rebuilding theme at the end. Great Science Fiction, great drama. WF
